With community support, Denim Day raises a record amount

Aurora Health Care has a long-lasting commitment to caring for survivors of sexual abuse. On April 24th, Aurora supported this initiative by participating in Denim Day 2013.

Almost 5,000 people raised awareness and vital funds for programs supporting survivors of domestic and sexual abuse.  Nearly 2,000 Aurora caregivers participated, raising a record total of more than $11,000! This was almost $2,000 more than 2012.

Building new bridges

Aurora also celebrated new community partnerships to bring Denim Day to a larger audience. The United Way of Greater Milwaukee, the City of Milwaukee, Johnson Bank, Quarles & Brady, the YWCA, and The United Performing Arts Fund were among the 15 organizations that recognized the Denim Day campaign with its employee base and raised more than $2,600.

All of the funds raised through Denim Day will support Aurora’s Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner programs throughout the system, the Sexual Assault Treatment Center in Milwaukee and The Healing Center in Milwaukee.

Several more organizations engaged in Denim Day activities, and an inaugural press conference at Milwaukee City Hall also helped elevate the awareness of this important campaign.

Cristy Garcia-Thomas, Aurora executive vice president and Aurora Foundation president, was among the featured speakers at the press event and had the opportunity to share the work of Aurora’s abuse response services in the community and the impact of our dedicated staff.

Sadly, recent news coverage of sexual abuse and violence highlights the importance of this campaign and strengthens our commitment to help survivors in the communities we serve.

A constant need

Each year, Aurora cares for more than 2,500 survivors of sexual abuse through services at The Healing Center, The Sexual Assault Treatment Center, and our many Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) programs.

Thank you again to everyone who participated. Your contribution will help to make a difference in the lives of the men, women and children who rely on us for support and recovery after a sexual abuse experience. Through your support, you continue to demonstrate how every gift can change a life!

Through your gift to Denim Day, you can help The Healing Center and other Aurora Health Care services strengthen our community response to sexual violence. Every gift can change a life. Consider yours today at our website!
