Milwaukee display calls attention to importance of palliative care

The Bucket List Bash, sponsored by ACUITY in Sheboygan, was held on October 12 and raised nearly $160,000 to benefit the creation of a Palliative Care program to serve the communities of Sheboygan County.

At a recent fundraising event to benefit a new Palliative Care program at Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center, we asked more than 550 people to consider how they would complete this sentence: “Before I die I want to…”

Featuring a small version of the famous wall by New Orleans’ artist Candy Chang, and with enough chalk to go around, a few of the endless list of responses included:

  • Dance in a musical
  • Kiss Mathew McConaughey
  • Write a children’s book
  • Spend my 401k (“wife’s” was inserted later in the evening)
  • Love with my whole heart
  • Be a grandma
  • Qualify for Boston marathon
  • Meet my biological parents

Some responses made us laugh.  Some brought tears to our eyes.  And some made us stop in our tracks to ponder life a bit deeper for a moment.

As Milwaukee has the opportunity to reflect on the same prompting question through a similar wall  created by artist Kristina Rolander, we feel it is important to share our experience at the Bucket List Bash for palliative care in Sheboygan and the impact it is having.  Rolander’s wall will be displayed outside the Sky High Skateboard Shop and Gallery, 2501 S. Howell Ave (Source: Jsonline.com)  through December 4 .

It is our hope that Milwaukee’s wall has a similar effect to the small display at the Bucket List Bash: Hundreds of individuals collectively taking a moment to consider life, death, and how we care for people during the ‘in-between’.
