Carey and Jeanne Catania, owners of Motion Plus Lanes in Cudahy, were delighted to present a check on March 12 for over $8,000 to Judy Tjoe, MD, breast cancer surgeon at Aurora Health Care to support the Team Phoenix program. They’ve organized the event for six years and this year selected Team Phoenix as their beneficiary. “The main thing that stood out to us was that the money stayed local. And it goes to the actual women who need the support,” Carey says.

Team Phoenix is a breast cancer survivorship program designed for survivors of all stages, ages, and fitness levels who train to complete a sprint distance triathlon with the ultimate goal of creating a lifelong attitude of wellness through exercise. Dr. Tjoe not only started the program, she’s a triathlete herself.

Ann Barrett in training“We’re grateful that successful business owners, exemplified by Carey and Jeanne, in our local communities recognize the healthful impact of our exercise program after cancer treatment. Our breast cancer patients are so appreciative of these donations that allow them to focus on getting back to an active life without worrying about the cost that is required to sustain these types of programs not yet recognized by insurance companies for reimbursement,” says Dr. Tjoe.

Team Phoenix also has a research component to it, which means the impact could extend well beyond just the survivors who participate. Dr. Tjoe explains, “These grateful patients give back by volunteering to participate in studies conducted by our research teams who are trying to better understand exactly how exercise contributes to better overall survival, and what motivates patients to engage in such exercise programs, either individually or as a group.”

Do you or someone you know have an interest in joining this tough team of survivors? Team Phoenix is actively recruiting for the 2015 season. Team Phoenix will have a squad of athletes training in the Milwaukee area and is expanding by adding another squad in the Racine/Kenosha area!
