Organizers of the Gunny Memorial Golf Outing got a close up look at some of the people who have been supported by their “golf game” over the years. Christopher Strom, John Mandli and Nick Becker have put on the annual golf fundraiser for 17 years, in honor of their good friend Brian “Gunny” Baumler who passed away in 1995 from non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the young age of 28.

The three men toured the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center on July 27, where patients just like Brian receive care every single day. Over the years, the golf outing has raised about $23,000 for cancer patients at Aurora St. Luke’s.

Chris says it was very gratifying to see in person, “We want to make sure the money stays local. It was very difficult to watch a friend battle this disease at such a young age and by donating to the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic at Aurora St. Luke’s, we hope we can help others to win the battle that Brian unfortunately lost.”

“It demonstrated how committed Aurora Cancer Care is to developing new and innovative treatment options, to providing emotional support and counseling.  We came away with a good feeling that the donations are going to an organization that is making a difference in cancer treatment. In fact, it was clear that through the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic, individuals are now winning the fight against cancer,” John says.

The Gunny Memorial Golf Outing is held in June of every year at Maplecrest Country Club in Kenosha. The three organizers are very grateful to all of the volunteers and people who participants each year. They also wanted to acknowledge Dan Plebanek, the President of Maplecrest Country Club, for being such a gracious and generous host every single year.

Nick says their motivation for this particular event came from their late friend’s own words: “In my honor, go have a beer, be friends, and make memories because that is what life is.” They hope to continue to make friends, all the while helping those fighting cancer, for years to come.
